Worthington Chamber Orchestra announces Ben Shirley as Composer-in-Residence for 2025 & 2026 seasons
Ben Shirley is a concert composer whose experience with addiction and homelessness informs his music. While staying at the Midnight Mission, in Los Angeles’ Skid Row, Ben earned a scholarship to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. His journey is documented in the award-winning documentary, Skid Row Marathon.
Ben is Composer-in-Residence for the Worthington Chamber Orchestra which will premiere his chamber work, “Big Pine Key” and his orchestral work, “Great Anticipation” in Spring 2026.
Ben also serves on the Board of Directors of the Newark-Granville Symphony Orchestra (NGSO). The NGSO will premiere his work for soprano & orchestra, “Le Baiser” in Spring 2026.
Ben’s clarinet quintet, “High Sierra Sonata” is featured on the GRAMMY® Award nominated ‘American Stories’ album, recorded by Pacifica Quartet & New York Philharmonic Principal Clarinetist, Anthony McGill.
A sought-after public speaker, Ben regularly shares his experience with homelessness to inspire civic engagement.
Ben also loves film composition and orchestration. Accomplishments include Best Original Score for Dr. West’s Fervor. He also served as orchestrator for the multi-award winning animated short,
